The Chez Panisse Foundation was created in 1996 by Alice Waters to develop and support programs that use food traditions to teach, nurture and empower youth. For more than a decade, we have been operating the Edible Schoolyard program at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, a public school in Berkeley, California – a one-acre garden and kitchen classroom, where students participate in all aspects of tending the garden and preparing and sharing fresh food. In addition, the Foundation has established a model school lunch program in the Berkeley Unified School District to inform our national advocacy efforts to transform school lunch in America’s public schools.
